Zambezi - Classic Long Canoe Safari

Canoeing the Zambezi River from Kariba to Kanyemba on the Mozambique border.

Minimum / Maximum Participants: Two / Eight
Minimum Age Limit: 14 years (no maximum)


Time allowed on the day of departure for last minute drinks shopping.


Passport: These must not be taken on the river but can be left in the office with other valuables.

Credit Cards: are not a recommended payment option in Zimbabwe.


Explorer Safaris: are self participatory which means that everyone helps in setting up their tents.


Luggage allowance of 10 kgs on the river.

Animals: Elephant, buffalo, impala, waterbuck, hippo, crocodile, plentiful birdlife.
Lion, leopard and painted hunting dog are more difficult to see.

Rate Includes:


Road transfers to and from the safari from Kariba - e.g. from Chirundu / to Mana Pools.


All meals.

Drinks: Cordials not minerals.There is no alcohol, other than wine with dinner each evening.


All canoeing equipment: The canoes are two-man Canadian-style canoes, and the paddles are American Carlisle paddles.


All camping equipment: Two-man dome tents, sleeping bags, liners, mattress, mosquito net, fly sheet, ground sheet and tarpaulin (in case of rainy weather).

Fully qualified canoe guides.

Day 1 - 18 kms: Luggage is portaged into the gorge before canoeing starts at 11h00, with a stop for lunch at 1300. Time is given for a siesta and then approx. 14h30, we resume canoeing until 17h00 when we set up camp in the middle of the river at Crocodile Rocks.


Day 2 - 27 kms: At sunrise we wake up to tea and coffee before paddling for a few hours before breakfast. Canoeing commences again at 09h30 with a lunch stop and siesta.About 15h00, we continue paddling to our next overnight stop at Twin Logs Island.

Day 3 - 28 kms: The day begins with another sunrise wake up call and breakfast with canoeing starting at 08h00. At Chirundu we get new supplies and after having a packed lunch we set off for Kakomarara Island to overnight.


Day 4 - 27 kms : After an early start with breakfast, we commence caneoing until noon for lunch and siesta. Canoeing continues again until 17h00 and overnight at Lone Acacia Island.

Day 5 - 23 kms : Same schedule as Day 4.

Day 6 - 20 kms: The programme is similar to Days 4 and 5 with overnighting at Chikwenya Island.

Day 7 - 25 kms: Another full day of canoeing with breakfast on an island or a riverbank.We overnight at False Gorge.

Day 8 - 20 kms: Similar to Day 7.In addition we will also explore the shoreline of the Chewore area and overnight at Mupata Gorge.

Day 9 - 35 kms: The day includes exploring the austere Mupata Gorge and its many endemic species of wildlife and spectacular geographical features.We will overnight at the base of the towering Red Cliffs.

Day 10 - 7 kms : The day starts of with an early wake up call and breakfast, before paddling down to the take out point at Kanyemba followed by a transfer back to Kariba.You will arrive back at approx. 16h00.
