Mozambique is 801,590 square kilometres in size and is the 36th largest country in the world. It is comparable in size to Turkey.

Mozambique is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Daylight Saving Time is not applied.

Capital city: Maputo, a small, bustling city situated on the west side of Maputo Bay, at the mouth of the Tembe River.

Mozambique boasts a tropical climate with two seasons, the wet season from October to March, and the dry season from April to September.

Rainfall along the coast is heavy, but decreases in the north and south. Cyclones are common during the wet season.

The best time to visit is between May and November, when rainfall and temperatures are at its lowest. It is also good to travel during the early part of the warm, rainy season from November to January, but be prepared for sweltering temperatures, especially during January.

Try to avoid the height of the rains, from February to March/April, as many of the roads become impassable and flooding is common in the south and centre.

musiciansDuring the holiday season, i.e. Easter, Christmas, New Years and in August, Mozambique’s southern coastal resorts become overrun with visitors and travellers, so book in advance.

Mozambique has a state owned cell phone rovider, Mcel and the South African owned Vodacom Mozambique.

Internet is readily available in Maputo, with many internet cafes and all major hotels boasting internet access.

There is little internet coverage outside of Maputo, mostly available in tourist areas, including Inhambane and Xai-Xai.

South African style plugs with 2 circular metal pins above the large circular grounding pin is used in Mozambique.

Although many resorts and hotels accept Rands, exchange your money if you want to purchase anything from the markets, shops and petrol stations. Money can be exchanged at banks (closed between 12:00pm – 14:00pm), local shops and even some markets.

Mozambique is not a dangerous place to visit; however, normal safety precautions should be taken when visiting this country.

Women should never walk alone on beaches
