Flights from Johannesburg to Livingstone

Zambia’s airlines are Aero Zambia (Z9) and Zambian Airways (Q3)

Other airlines serving Zambia : Air Zimbabwe, British Airways, Delta Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, KLM, Nationwide Air and South African Airways.

Approximate flight times: From London to Lusaka is 10 hours.

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS are situated at Lusaka (LUN) is 26km (16 miles) east of the city (travel time – 30 minutes).

Airport and city bus services are available as well as taxi services to the city.

Return is by prior arrangement with taxis (taxi fares are negotiable).

AIRPORT FACILITIES include outgoing duty-free shop, car hire, bank/bureau de change, restaurant and post office.

MFUWE AIRPORT (MFU) is situated in the South Luangwa National Park, 1 hour 15 minutes’ flight from Lusaka International Airport

Lodges and camps within the park provide airport transfers by prior arrangement.

DEPARTURE TAXES : US$20 (payable in cash) whilst transit passengers and children under 2 years are exempt

ENTRY VISAS COSTS

There are daily flights Mfuwe/Lusaka/Livingstone and Livingstone/Lusaka/Mfuwe from April 1 - 15 November 2003. Then 3 times a week 16 November - 31 December 2003.

AIRWAVES AIRLINK are flying Mfuwe/Lusaka return daily

MIGRATION AIR fly Livingstone/Lusaka return daily

NATIONWIDE fly Joburg/Livingstone/Lusaka return 3 times a week, also connecting to the Airwaves Airlink flights to/from Mfuwe.

By Road

The main overland routes from the south to Zambia are; via Harare in Zimbabwe through the border at either Kariba or Chirundu; via Bulawayo and across the Victoria Falls Bridge; via Botswana across the ferry at Kazungula near Livingstone.

Zambia can be entered from Malawi at the Mchinga/Chipata border, or further north at Nyika Plateau or Chitipa

The Tanzanian entry point is through the Tunduma/Nakonde border post onto the Great North road

Access from Congo D.R. is via the Lumbumbashi - Chingola road, but there is no access from Angola as yet.

Road borders all open at 06h00 and close at 18h00 except Victoria falls which closes at 20h00.

VEHICLE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To bring a vehicle into Zambia one must obtain a temporary import permit (TIP), at the border, or depending on the country of origin, a carnet de passage.

If the driver is not the owner of the vehicle they must have a letter from the owner authorising the use of the vehicle in Zambia.

Third party insurance can be purchased at the border. Have your vehicle papers on hand at all times as road blocks are fairly frequent.

Zambian Third Party Insurance on vehicles and trailers at border post - which is about R250 per vehicle and trailer valid for one month.

Carbon Tax in Zambia depending on the vehicle capacity is approximately R300 per vehicle.

Council levy of R 70 per vehicle and R 70 per trailer

All foreign vehicles have to pay a Cross Border Charge (CBC) permit when entering Namibia and which has to be handed in at the departing border post.

For Caprivi Region the permits are available in Katima Mulilo and cost R150 per vehicleand R100 per trailer.

All RSA vehicles have to display a ZA bumper sticker.

It is advised that South African registered vehicles have a recent Police Clearance Certificate.

By Bus

Dar es Salaam and Mbeya in Tanzania to the border, where Zambian buses can be caught to the Copperbelt and Lusaka.

From Malawi, a private bus company runs the Lilongwe - Lusaka Route.

The Intercape Mainliner and Translux offer services to and from Johannesburg in South Africa. Their combined timetables make possible daily departures.

COACH & BUS SERVICES available to Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe with the main routes:

from Zimbabwe via Chirundu or Kariba and Livingstone
from Botswana via Kasane and Kazungula
from Mozambique via Villa Gambito and Zumbo
from Tanzania via Nakonde and Mbala
from Malawi via the Mchinga/Chipata border or further north at Nyika Plateau

ROAD BORDER hours are from 0600-1800 (except for Victoria Falls 0600 - 2000)
No border crossing from Angola.
A Temporary Import Permit is needed to bring a vehicle into Zambia.

By river/lake

Zambia is one of the five countries bordering Lake Tanganyika and a ferry operates from Burundi to Tanzania to Zambia and back once a week, arriving and leaving the port of Mpulungu every Friday.

By Rail

catch a train from South Africa to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, then take the ferry train across the bridge to Livingstone (twice daily) and another train to Lusaka, the Copperbelt or the Northern Province.

From Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, the Tazara line runs through to Kapiri Mposhi, where you can catch another train to Lusaka or Kitwe on the Copperbelt
Customs and immigration are conducted on board.

Passengers trains in Zambia are run by ZAMBIA RAILWAYS and TANZANIA-ZAMBIA RAILWAY.

ZAMBIA RAILWAYS run

The ”Zambezi Express” three days a week Livingstone-Lusaka three days a week a through Livingstone-Kapiri Mposhi-Ndola-Kitwe

Steam Africa Express. Runs excursion trains from Victoria Falls to Livingstone and back again in a 1900 Safari Steam Train
The train can be used for single journeys. It has a lounge car, where soft drinks and champagne are served (included). The train stops on the bridge for photography. Relive the forgotten era of the Steam Train

The ”Mukuba Express” and ”Kilimanjaro Express” are, together with the occasional Steam Africa Express, the only international trains to/from Zambia
